The legendary actor/comedian Phil Hartman (full name Phillip Edward Hartman) would have turned 71 years old today if he was still alive. Phil was born on September 24, 1948, in Brantford, Ontario, Canada, and went on to become a worldwide sensation in the late 80s as an impersonator on the famous sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live. Phil’s life came to a tragic end in May 1998 when he was killed in a homicide, which left his kids’ life in jeopardy.  Read on to find out what happened to Phil Hartman’s daughter and son after his death. 

Phil Hartman was killed by his third wife Brynn Omdahl

Phil had married thrice in his lifetime - first to Gretchen Lewis from 1970 to 1972, second to real estate agent Lisa Strain from 1982 to 1985 and lastly to former model and aspiring actress Brynn Omdahl in November 1987. Reportedly, Phil had met his last wife on a blind date a year before. 

Following his second divorce, his ex-wife Lisa had an interview with People and spoke out about the reason for their divorce. She told that Hartman was reclusive in real life and that he would disappear emotionally and be in his own world. “That passivity made you crazy,” told Lisa. 

Reports state that his first marriage also ended due to a similar problem. And his third marriage wasn’t any good either. Sources who had known the couple from close have stated that his final marriage too had many difficulties - mostly due to Brynn’s feeling intimidated by Phil’s successful career. She was also frustrated about not being able to find any on her own. 

Despite having problems, Phil and Brynn never wanted a divorce. Instead, Phil considered retiring to save his family. He even tried to get Brynn some acting job but her narcotics and alcohol addiction came in the way as she needed to enter rehab several times.

On the evening of May 27, 1998, Brynn visited a restaurant in Encino, California, with producer/writer Christine Zander, who stated that Brynn was “in a good frame of mind.” 

After returning home, Brynn and Phil had a heated argument about her drug issues. Phil went to bed after issuing a warning to Brynn, who entered his room at around 3 a.m. of May 28 and shot him to death. Brynn was intoxicated and shot Phil thrice.

After confessing her crime to two of her friends, Brynn killed herself.

Phil did not have any children from his first two marriages but had one son named Sean Edward Hartman and one daughter named Birgen Anika Hartman from the last one. Sean was 9 and Birgen was 6 when they lost their parents. Both the Hartman children were home that violent night.

Following the murder-suicide at the Hartman home, both the kids moved in with their aunt (their mother’s sister) and uncle Katherine Omdahl and Mike Wright. The kids were raised under a different last name to protect them from the media.

Sean, 31, and Birgen, 27, are still living a quiet life, away from the public’s eyes. ABC News stated that Sean is pursuing is dreams of becoming an artist and musician. Meanwhile, Birgen is handling her own business and family. Birgen got married to Brandon in Italy last year. 

Although both the Hartman siblings are not fond of getting public attention, Birgen did make an appearance at Saturday Night Live in 2015 to celebrate the show’s 40th anniversary. On the live special, she said, “It's just heartwarming for me to see, after all these years, that he is still remembered and admired.”

Talking of Birgen, though everything seems to be going well in her life now, at one time, she did struggle with substance abuse. However, she got rid of it and has been sober since February 2012. 

As of now, both Sean and Birgen have received their first installment from their father’s estate in accordance with Phil Hartman’s will. They will acquire their third and final installment at age 35.
