Washington Post's Felicia Sonmez suspended for Kobe Bryant tweet
Many are wondering who Felicia Sonmez is after she made headlines on January 16, 2020 for tweeting a 2016 story about Kobe Bryant. Felicia is a national political reporter working at the Washington Post. She was suspended after her controversial tweet of a story about Bryant's allegation case just hours after his tragic death.
Sonmez had posted a link to story from The Daily Beast, which was published in April 2016, about a 2003 case in which a 19 year old woman made allegations against Bryant.
People are outraged over Sonmez's insensitive tweet and are blasting her for the timing of the post. Sonmez has since deleted her tweet. The reporter shared on Twitter that 10,000 people sent her abuse and death threats after her tweet.
After deleting the tweet, Sonmez followed up with, "‘Well, THAT was eye-opening. to the 10,000 people (literally) who have commented and emailed me with abuse and death threats, please take a moment and read the story - which was written 3+ years ago, and not by me. "
"Any public figure is worth remembering in their totality even if that public figure is beloved and that totality unsettling," she continued.
In a follow-up tweet, Sonmez wrote, ‘If your response to a news article is to resort to harassment and intimidation of journalists, you might want to consider that your behavior says more about you than the person you’re targeting.’
