The emotionally draining and frustrating to say the least, process of divorce, with the additional fight for child custody, the movie Marriage Story portrays the life of two young adults trying to hang to their humanity while they experience the worst days of their lives. Baumbach based the movie in part on his own divorce from actress Jennifer Jason Leigh.

Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver have shown immense emotions and strong performance in depicting the roles of Nicole and Charlie. With the movie showing both sides to the story and making it overall symmetric, there was an equal pressure upon both the casts to give it their all so that the story doesn’t lose its weight.

Furthermore, divorce, marriage, and custody of a 7-year-old child are sensitive topics that can be a challenge to showcase. Despite all the odds both Scarlett and Adam showed phenomenal execution. It might even be enough to say that this might be their best performance yet. 

There is also a strong supporting cast, including Julie Hagerty as Johansson's mother, Laura Dern, and Ray Liotta who both give witty performances as the jousting divorce attorneys on opposites sides.  

In this midst of all the divorce and courtroom battles, the overwhelming feeling a child might feel that he is so new to is difficult for even grown-ups to properly portray. Azhy whom Baumbach finds as a lucky find brilliantly portrayed the role. Noah says “I really had the thing of pinching myself: Did we really find the kid so quickly?”  

Baumbach praises Azhy saying “He’s an amazing guy and a terrific actor in that he both knows his lines and you can give him direction — all the things that you can do with an adult, but then he’s just very much himself and that thing that you want from a child actor, that thing that you can’t even describe, really, that makes a kid a kid. He is able to do that and be himself while also telling the story of the movie.”
