On Thursday, November 14, 2019, a very sad incident took place at Saugus High School, Santa Clarita. Three children were killed in the school after a 16-year-old boy named Nathaniel Berhow opened fire at his classmates. Who was Nathaniel Berhow and what happened to him after the shooting? Casualties of Saugus High School, Santa Clarita shooting

The unfortunate event at Saugus High School took place at about 7:30 in the morning. An off-duty sheriff deputy along with the other two off-duty police officers who were there to drop off their kids reported the incident to the authorities after hearing the gunshots from inside the school.

Soon afterward sheriff’s deputies swarmed the scene and removed multiple victims from the school. Later, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office reported that three kids died as the result of the shooting while three other kids were injured.

Of the injured children, one was released from the hospital after minor treatment and the others were in stable condition too.

The deceased included a 15-year-old girl named Gracie Muehlberger, a 14-year-old boy named Dominic Blackwell and the shooter himself. Gracie and Dominic died at the scene while Nathaniel was discovered in a grave condition. He had been taken to the hospital but he died on Friday at around 3:30 PM.

Policemen originally believed that the suspect had fled from the school after shooting. It was confirmed that the gunman was one of the victims after watching surveillance videos and having interviews with witnesses.

Initial reports suggested that the shooter had died at the scene. The reports were later amended to say that he was taken to the hospital in a critical condition, along with the other victims. 

Nathaniel was a sophomore at the high school and opened fire at his classmates on his 16th birthday. Police stated that a .45 caliber gun was used in the shooting. It was empty when discovered.

Who are Nathaniel Berhow’s parents? Family History

Nathaniel’s father has passed away. His name was Mark Berhow and was a native of Lancaster, California. Mark passed away on December 5, 2017, at age 55, in Valencia, California due to heart attack. The LA County coroner’s office told The New York Post that a “history of chronic alcoholism” contributed to Mark’s death.

Mark’s obituary page on the web (now deleted) had a picture of Mark with various rifles. One of Nate’s friends, Ryan, told KTLA-TV, “His dad used to make bullets, so I’d assume he had bullets and stuff like that.” However, authorities have not confirmed who owned the semi-automatic handgun that was used in the shooting.

Mark’s obituary named his wife as Mami Matasuura and their two kids as Samantha and Nathaniel. Apparently, Mami is of Japanese descent as one of the tributes to Mark on Facebook stated that Mami had her family flying from Japan to California for her husband’s funeral. 

Online records revealed that Nathaniel’s father and mother began divorce proceedings in August of 2016. Records also showed that Mami was filing for the custody of their children.

Authorities questioned Nate’s girlfriend and mother but nothing has come of it. The motive for the shooting has not been established yet.
