What happened to Otis on Chicago Fire?
Chicago Fire returned for its Season 8 on September 25, 2019, which revealed serious injuries and one major death. The aftermath of the big cliffhanger in Season 7 showed the basement of the factory about to explode with Severide and most of his colleagues being able to find a hiding place in a separate room.
The basement explodes with one firefighter left outside of the adjacent room. Cruz (Joe Minoso) responds to a firefighter distress call and it turns out to be Otis, played by Yuriy Sardarov, who was the one who didn't make it to the room. The responders immediately take an unconscious Otis into an ambulance, accompanied by Cruz.
Otiz has serious burns all over his body. The firefighters gather at Med to hear the news about Otis. He wakes up and utters the phrase "I will be with you forever" in Russian before passing away.

Why is Otis (Yuri Sardarov) leaving Chicago Fire in 2019?
Showrunner Derek Haas revealed that the decision to kill off Yuriy Sardarov was purely creative. He told TV Insider that it had to be a core cast member for it to be a real surprise. "There were other candidates including Ritter (Daniel Kyri), but he had only been around this last season... We thought that Yuri affects everyone in the house as well as fans," he said.
Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Haas said that while the decision to kill off Otis was difficult, it was what was needed to move the story forward.
He also shared that we will see lasting effects from this loss. "We didn't want to just write it off in the first episode and then forget that he existed. That's not real life and that's not the way it works. Playing off that notion of tragedy takes time before you can get to the other side of it emotionally. That clock is different for different people... To see those different elements and not cheapen them, and really make it have lasting effects, that's what we're doing," he said.
